Random thoughts from a cold Tuesday

1) Does walking on crunchy, squeaky snow make you feel colder than you actually are?

2) You know that you are getting older when your favourite pants for cold weather are snow pants ;)

3) Why do teenagers with bed head think that wearing a hat will mess their hair? Can it actually get worse? ;)

4) Why did the early settlers who were well-liked by the king from their homeland get free land in freezing Quebec when all the prisoners got to go to Australia? That is one mean king! ;)

5) I will always happily pay for pizza lunches at school if I get a free pass for making lunches ;)

6) Nail polish never lasts more than 15 minutes on my nails, no matter how much I spend to have my nails done.

7) Montreal has the best parking habits after snow storms! So post-apocalyptic!

8) Now that I have written about pizza lunches, I am craving pizza 😜

9) This past weekend, someone gave me 4 cupcakes. I did not share them and I don't feel guilty ;)

10)  My new Bodum combo travelling mug/French press is the best thing ever! Seriously!

Damn cold!

Today is cold. Actually, yesterday was also cold. Tomorrow will also be cold. The weather app on my phone says that it will suck until Wednesday... and then start sucking again on Thursday ;) These are the days that I really appreciate the seat heaters in our car... and hot baths!

I was going to take outside "cold" pictures but, despite that I love you all, it was nicer inside... so here is a very appropriate picture that I found on the internet ;)

Mean mother.... the #2,478,392 edition

According to my kids, I am responsible for putting poison on their feet, heads, hands and backs. It is a poison so terrible that they automatically recoil in horror when I bring out the offending items. It is a poison so terrible that their friends look at them with pity. What is this poison? you may ask. Just because I love you all, I will give you the secret answer: temperature-appropriate clothing ;) That is right! I am so mean! How dare I give my children temperature-appropriate clothing to wear? ;)

Every morning, the conversation starts like this:
"Mamma, do I have to wear my jacket?"
"Yes."
"And my hat and gloves?"
"Yes."
'WWWWHHHHYYYYY DDDDDOOOOO IIIIIII HHHHHAAAAVVVVEEEE TTTTOOOOO WWWWWEEEEEAAAARRRRR TTTTTHHHHHEEEEEEMMMMM?" (Said in whiny voice).
"Because it is minus -10C outside."
"But it is so hot out....."
Seriously.... this is what they say. It is hot outside. No, boys, it is -18C with windchill. No one would ever call that hot. PLUS, I will also get you to put your snow pants in your school bag... just to rub it in ;)

It is the same fight all the time. Alexander has tried, on numerous occasions, to sneak out of the house with a hoodie... just a hoodie... when we were in the middle of a snowstorm (and we have had a few of those lately but that is another story).. and without gloves or hat... or boots. Nicklas and Oliver freak out when they see their winter jackets... and even more when they have to actually put them on. See, it is like poison. Then the game turns to "how little of my jacket do I actually have to let touch my body?", which means jacket wide open and off the shoulders. In my universe, at least the poison jacket is on (yes, I pick my battles) and the ever menacing snow pants are in their school bags, so I am satisfied.

Hats, gloves, scarves and boots.... mmmmwwwwaaaahhhhhaaaaaa.... sheer poison! ;)

Sometimes, the clouds are almost better!

Whenever I talk to my friends in Scandinavia, they always tell me how nice it must be to have sun during our winters (average Danish/Southern Swedish winter ranges from -5C to +5C, damp and grey). OK... I agree the sun is nice... when you are inside because, sometimes, the sunny days are the super cold ones. This morning, it was sunny (yes, nice) but -27C with windchill (very not so nice). That sneaky sunshine! You think it will be warm and then it smacks you in the face! I remember when I lived in Denmark, I was probably the only one smiling during the grey winter day commute to work. I could bike. I could wear my running shoes. I could wear my cute coat. The air did not hurt my face. I could go out for a long walk. I didn't have the same urge to hibernate as I do here. Yes- I had to wear rain pants... but never snow pants ;)

Sunshine, I will love you more in the summertime. I promise ;)

Today

This is what Montreal weather was like today... apparently, it was colder in Montreal than Siberia, the North Pole and certain parts of Mars. Fantastic... I am beyond words ;)

Holy Crap!

It is COLD outside (insert bad words here). Suddenly, it feels like it is January... a crappy January.... with crunchy snow and all.  The dogs even cut our walk short ;) Haha! The whining is starting already ;)

When it is -20C outside, it is always best to remember summer ;) Ahhhhhh.... ;)

Freezing

It is freezing outside today. Not just a little cold, not just a lot cold but absolutely freezing. I think that we are pretty close to North Pole kind of cold and I am not exaggerating.... I am SO glad that it is the weekend and we can stay indoors :P

I will not say anymore ;) Hope you are all having a good weekend so far. If you are living in a place that has some extra nice, warm weather that you don't need, please send it to us. It would be GREATLY appreciated xox

Tease!

One of my pet peeves is seeing spring time clothes displays in shop windows when it is super cold outside. Hey mannequins! If you had to be outside right now, you surely wouldn't be wearing those clothes so effortlessly ;) You would be freezing your plastic butts off! What a tease! ;)

Memorable February

This February has been the coldest on RECORDED HISTORY! See, I wasn't imagining it ;) Unless it becomes +40C every day, for the next few days, then this February wins the award for being the most memorable, award winning terrible month... EVER.... Well, maybe until next year ;)

Good riddance!

I will now cease my complaining because March is supposed to bring actually sane, normal temperatures.... like -10C ;)

Best purchase ever....

Well.... maybe not THE best.... but pretty close ;)
This past weekend, I got really fed up of smelly, wet gloves so, today, as a part of my procrastination routine, I searched online for glove driers. I found this one.... at Canadian Tire*, no less....

*for any non Canadian people who read this blog: Canadian Tire is an iconic hardware store that sells just about everything... from fishing rods to laundry soap to car parts to carpets to winter boots to windshield washer fluid to paint to toys to bikes to cat litter....well, you get the idea ;) Anyway, they are ALL OVER CANADA so it kind of binds us... a bit cultural... kind of like Tim Horton's (which I will save for another post)....

Back to the point of this blog: I love this thing. It is kind of like a blow drier for your gloves, leaving them dry and WARM.... this Canadian heart is loving it! So much for doing fashion posts, especially when it is hitting -35C tonight.... I'll take my MaxxDryXL (seriously, that is the name)!

Hello!

Stop the cold.... this is getting ridiculous!

It is another week of -30C weather... we're, on average, 15 degrees colder than most years (and guess what? I complained THEN... eek.... imagine NOW). I say "Stop the cold weather! I have had enough!"....
Don't let the sunshine fool you.... it means COLDER weather.... :P

PS: it was the Canadian flag's 50th birthday on the 15th.... despite the rocky acceptance to start, we stand on guard for thee....

Just too cold

This winter has been a real teaser: we get a few "warm-ish" days and then, bam!, super cold days follow. It has been like this all through January and it seems like February will be the same. These kinds of days are really too cold to go out and do anything :( On Monday, I think that I said some very bad words while I was walking/running from the parking lot to my work building... glad no one was around to hear that ;) Anyway, I am trying to think warm thoughts and remember the +35C days of summer- which I have to say that I definitely prefer... no complaining of the heat here ;)

Yesterday was fairly warm... only -14C/no wind.... so today should start to get colder... think warm thoughts.... think warm thoughts.... think warm thoughts.....

Wintery Wednesday

Today I got to work from home and actually get caught up with my courses :) What a luxury! This next week will actually be somewhat prepared. Also, on my "lunch break", I cleaned up the house. You know, sometimes, it is just the little things....

Today = too cold....

.... to even take a darn photo!!! When I went to pick up the boys, it was -24 C and dropping. I was NOT taking my gloves off ;) So, here is a picture (not taken by me) that is close to what the weather seemed like, including the rush hour traffic ;) Maybe there was a bit less sun.....
